Labour Pain Management
At Yupiter Hospital, we offer comprehensive labour pain management services to help reduce the intensity of pain during labour and childbirth. These services include both natural and medical techniques tailored to each patient’s needs. During your birth plan discussion, your healthcare provider will explain various pain management options so you are prepared for what to expect during labour. The final choice of technique will depend on the mother’s and baby’s health, as well as your healthcare provider’s recommendation.
What is Labour Pain?
Labour pain occurs when the cervix dilates (opens) and effaces (thins) to allow the baby to move into the birth canal. It is caused by uterine contractions and can begin one or two weeks before your due date. Each woman’s experience is unique, but common signs of labour include backaches, contractions, water breaking, increased bathroom urgency, and a small amount of blood or mucus from the cervix.
Stages of Labour Pain
Labour is divided into three stages:
- First Stage: The cervix begins to dilate, causing mild and irregular contractions. This stage has two phases: latent and active. As labour progresses, contractions become stronger and more frequent.
- Second Stage: This is the pushing stage, where the cervix is fully dilated, and the baby moves through the birth canal, ending with the baby’s birth.
- Third Stage: This stage involves the delivery of the placenta after the baby is born.
Labour Pain Management Techniques
Labour pain can be managed through two main approaches: natural and medical.
- Self-Help Methods: These include relaxation and breathing techniques such as Lamaze, yoga, hypnotherapy, visual imagery, and rhythmic breathing. Changing positions during labour can also help you manage pain and gain control.
- Piped Entonox: A safe, ready-to-use gas mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Delivered via a mask, it provides pain relief without side effects for the mother or baby.
- Epidural: A type of anesthesia that blocks pain signals from the birth canal to the brain. While safe, it may cause temporary side effects like leg heaviness or a drop in blood pressure.
- Water Birthing: Immersion in warm water during labour can help with relaxation, pain relief, and control. Some women choose to remain in water throughout the process, while others opt for a water birth.
- TENS: Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) machines help stimulate the body’s production of natural painkillers (endorphins) and reduce pain signals sent to the brain.
