Fetal Medicine
VBAC offers women who’ve had a C-section the option to deliver vaginally. Traditionally, it was believed that after a C-section, vaginal delivery wasn’t possible. However, VBAC has changed that with a safe approach for women. Your obstetrician will determine if VBAC is a suitable option for you.
Preparing for VBAC
Your obstetrician will guide you through the preparation for VBAC. They will evaluate your medical history, current pregnancy, and overall health to decide if you qualify. If you’re eligible, your doctor will create a personalized care plan and provide regular monitoring and support throughout.
Who is eligible for VBAC?
You may be a candidate for VBAC if:
- You are pregnant with a single baby and have had a low transverse C-section
- You are expecting twins and have had a low transverse C-section
- You’ve had at least one previous vaginal delivery
- You have a history of a C-section with an unknown uterine incision that poses no risk
When VBAC is not recommended
VBAC may not be advisable if:
- You’ve had three or more C-sections
- You’ve experienced a uterine rupture
- You have a high uterine incision
- Your pregnancy is high-risk or you’ve had uterine surgery
- It has been less than 18 months since your last C-section
- Labour doesn’t start naturally or progresses slowly
- Your BMI is over 40
Benefits of VBAC
VBAC offers several advantages, including:
- Reduced future pregnancy risks: VBAC lowers the likelihood of complications like placenta previa and avoids the need for multiple C-sections.
- Fewer surgical risks: There’s less risk of issues like bleeding, scarring, blood clots, and infections, as well as a lower chance of abdominal injury.
- Quicker recovery: VBAC typically results in a shorter recovery time and hospital stay compared to repeat C-sections.
- Higher birth satisfaction: Many women report greater satisfaction with vaginal deliveries and experience less abdominal pain post-birth.
Risks of VBAC
While VBAC is generally safe, some risks include:
- Emergency C-section: If labour stalls or progresses slowly, you may need an emergency C-section.
- Scar rupture: If the scar from a previous C-section reopens, immediate medical intervention and an emergency C-section may be necessary to avoid serious complications.
What to expect during VBAC
If you opt for VBAC, your birthing experience will resemble a natural delivery. Your healthcare team will monitor your progress closely, with preparations in place for a potential emergency C-section if needed.
